They are wholly unrelated to the previous credits, which measured the duration of the classes given by the lecturer in each subject. Each old credit was worth ten teaching hours.
The new European credits value the time invested by students to acquire the skills of the study program. Each credit represents between 25 and 30 hours of learning. This not only includes classroom attendance but also dedication to studying, carrying out seminars, the results of exercises, etc.
New Methods
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) represents a genuine change in the methodology of European higher education; a more advanced model in which the student passes from ‘education through teaching based on the receipt of knowledge’, to ‘education through learning based on the development of competencies’. This system requires teaching staff to provide training that teaches students how to learn and requires students to take greater responsibility for their own education.
New Frontiers
Furthermore, ECTS credits represent a genuine passport to attend European universities with total security. They are the single currency that allows us to evaluate higher studies in Europe based on common criteria. They are the gateway that provides students with mobility through the different campuses of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA).
