
The participation of students in the European university convergence process crosses the borders of the countries that comprise the EHEA. This participation moves through European, multi-disciplinary, international and sector-based associations, and its opinion is valued in the most relevant education forums.
European Associations
ESU, European Students’ Union, brings together a total of 49 student unions in 38 countries and represents more than 10 million students.
It aims to represent and promote the educational, social, economic and cultural interests of students in all relevant European institutions, especially the European Union, the Bologna Follow-Up Group, the Council of Europe and UNESCO.
Multidisciplinary Associations
AEGEE, the European Students’ Forum (Association des États Généraux des Étudiants de l'Europe) is one of the strongest international and inter-disciplinary student associations in Europe.
One of its principal areas of action is higher education as well as promoting cultural exchanges and reinforcing European sentiment. It also organises summer university courses, among other activities.
AIESEC, the International Association of Students in Economic and Commercial Sciences, is the largest international multi-disciplinary student organisation in the world with more than 32,000 members around the globe.
Sector Associations
BEST, Board of European Students of Technologies. The association of European technology students was founded in 1989 based on understanding and respect between different cultures and societies.
This European network comprises 81 local groups in nearly 30 countries, including fours Spanish universities: Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, University of Valladolid and Universidad Carlos III.
Its members organise academic courses, engineering competitions and educational symposiums. The latter are events at which students participate in debates and have the opportunity to express their ideas about educational issues.
ELSA, the European Law Students Association, is the largest association of law students in the world, with more than 30,000 members in more than 36 countries in Europe. It currently has relations with various international organisations, including ECOSOC (United Nations Economic and Social Council), UNCITRAL, (UN Commission on International Trade Law), UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), ICC (International Criminal Court), UNHCHR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees), UNRISD (United Nations Research Institute for Social Development ), ILO (International Law Office), WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), WTO (World Trade Organisation), ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross ), the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, among others.
