The European University Association (EUA) is one of the most influential organisations in European higher education. It brings together hundreds of universities from 46 countries. It was founded in March 2001 in the Spanish city of Salamanca from the merger of the Association of European Universities (CRE) and the Confederation of European Union Rectors' Conferences.
It aims to become a “specific forum for cooperation at the forefront of the latest trends in higher education and research strategies”. In effect, it assumes responsibility for documenting the advances in the Bologna Process.
Its reports on trends and policy statements on higher education, whose publication coincides with the biennial meetings of the ministers of education of the sponsoring states of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), are especially relevant:
- Since 1999, Trends in European Higher Education has defined the evolution of the European education integration process. Five reports have been published to date.
- EUA Political Declarations & Policy Positions have also been essential documents. The last report on the Lisbon Declaration, passed on 13 April 2007 was entitled Europe’s Universities beyond 2010: Diversity with a Common Purpose.
